Hilary Erhard Duff (born September 28, 1987) is an American actress, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, and author.[1] After working in local theater plays and television commercials in her childhood, she achieved fame playing the title role in the Disney Channel television series Lizzie McGuire. She also reprised her role in the The Lizzie McGuire Movie. With the success of the Lizzie McGuire franchise, she established herself as a teen idol. Duff subsequently ventured into motion pictures and has appeared in many successful films, including Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen, A Cinderella Story and Cheaper by the Dozen 2.
Duff has expanded her repertoire to include pop music and has released three RIAA-certified platinum albums. Metamorphosis, her debut studio album, was certified triple platinum. She followed it up with two more albums, Hilary Duff and Most Wanted, which were also certified platinum. In 2007, Duff released her third studio album, Dignity, which was certified gold[2] and spawned her highest charting US single to date, "With Love". Best of Hilary Duff, a compilation of her greatest hits, was released in the last quarter of 2008. As of 2007, Duff has sold thirteen million records worldwide.[3]
She has also made a foray into the fashion industry by launching her own clothing lines, Stuff by Hilary Duff and Femme for DKNY Jeans. She has also signed with IMG Models and released two exclusive perfume collections with Elizabeth Arden.[4] Her other business ventures include writing a young adult novel, Elixir, and working as an executive producer for According to Greta and as a producer for Material Girls and Beauty & the Briefcase.

Early life

Hilary Erhard Duff was born on September 28, 1987 in Houston, Texas,[5] to Susan Colleen (née Cobb), a homemaker, and Robert Erhard Duff, a partner in a chain of convenience stores.[6] Duff has an elder sister, Haylie, who is also an actress and singer. Her mother encouraged her to enroll in acting classes alongside Haylie. Both girls won roles in local theatre productions.[7] At the ages of six and eight, the two sisters participated in a BalletMet Columbus production of The Nutcracker Suite in San Antonio.[5] The sisters became increasingly interested in pursuing acting and their mother moved with them to California, while their father stayed in Houston to take care of his business.[6][7] The sisters auditioned for several years and were cast in several television commercials.[6] Due to her acting career, Duff was home-schooled.[8]

Acting career

1997–2002: Career beginnings and Lizzie McGuire

Duff primarily played minor roles during her initial acting years. In 1997, she had an uncredited role in the Hallmark Entertainment western miniseries True Women. The following year, she played an uncredited extra in an ensemble dramedy, Playing by Heart. Her first major role was as a young witch, Wendy, in Casper Meets Wendy. The film, however, was released to mostly unenthusiastic reviews.[9][10] In 1999, Duff appeared in a supporting role in the television film The Soul Collector, which was based on a Kathleen Kane novel. For her performance, Duff won a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie or Pilot (Supporting Young Actress).[11]
Duff first rose to fame in 2000 when she was cast as one of the children in the pilot episode of the NBC sitcom Daddio. Her co-star, Michael Chiklis, stated, "After working with her the first day, I remember saying to my wife, 'this young girl is going to be a movie star'. She was completely at ease with herself and comfortable in her own skin."[6] However, prior to the airing of the show, Duff was dropped from the cast which made her reluctant to pursue her acting career further.[6] However, her manager and mother urged her on and a week later she auditioned successfully for the title role of a newly developed children's television series, Lizzie McGuire.[6] The show focused on the growth of the central character, "Lizzie McGuire" into teenhood. Lizzie McGuire first aired on the Disney Channel on January 12, 2001, and was a ratings hit. It attracted about 2.3 million viewers per episode.[6] Her participation in the show made her popular among children between the ages of 7 and 14.[12] Richard Huff, a New York Daily News critic, called her "a 2002 version of Annette Funicello".[6] After Duff fulfilled her 65 episode contract with Lizzie McGuire, Disney considered expanding the franchise to films and a prime-time television series. The plans however failed, because Duff's representatives said she was not being paid enough for the proposed series.[13]
Duff's first role in a theatrical motion picture was in Human Nature in 2002. The film was showcased first at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals.[14] In the film, Duff portrayed the younger version of a female naturalist, played by Patricia Arquette. Duff also starred in the Disney Channel television film Cadet Kelly (2002), which became the network's most watched program in its 19-year history.[6] In the film, she played the role of a free-spirited girl who struggles in a strict military school.

2003–06: Breakthrough film roles

In 2003, Duff received her first major role in a feature film when she was cast alongside Frankie Muniz in Agent Cody Banks. The film received positive reviews and was successful enough to spawn a sequel in which Duff was however not cast. That year, Duff reprised her role as Lizzie McGuire for The Lizzie McGuire Movie. It received mixed reviews, with certain critics calling it "an unabashed promotion of Duff’s image, just as Crossroads was for Britney Spears".[15][16][17] Later that year, Duff played one of the 12 children of Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in the family film Cheaper by the Dozen, which remains her highest grossing film to date.[18] She reprised her role in the sequel Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005), which was less successful as the original film and was panned by critics.[19]
Duff also made several guest appearances in television shows, her first being as a sick child in the medical drama Chicago Hope in March 2000.[20] In a 2003 episode of George Lopez, she had a role as a makeup salesperson; she later reappeared in the show in 2005 as Kenzie, a feminist poet friend of the character Carmen (Masiela Lusha). In the same year, she acted opposite her sister Haylie in American Dreams, while in 2005, she played a classmate and idolizer of the title character of Joan of Arcadia.[21]
In 2004, Duff starred in the romantic comedy A Cinderella Story. Though the reviews were mostly negative, the film went on to become a moderate box office hit,[18][22] and some critics were impressed by Duff's performance.[23] Later that year, she starred in the film Raise Your Voice, her first role in a drama film. While some critics praised her for appearing in a more mature and serious role than her previous films, the film itself was heavily panned and was not successful at the box office.[24] Several reviews were indifferent towards her acting performance and were critical of Duff's vocals, with critics pointing out what appeared to be her digitally enhanced voice.[25][26][27][28] The same year, Duff received her first Razzie nomination for worst actress for her roles in Raise Your Voice and A Cinderella Story.[29] In 2005, Duff starred in The Perfect Man, in which she played the eldest daughter of a divorced woman (Heather Locklear). In the same year, Duff was again nominated for a Razzie Award, for The Perfect Man and Cheaper by the Dozen 2.[30] Later that year, the Duff sisters lent their voices to the computer animated comedy Foodfight!, which was to be distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment but was never released. The director of the film, Larry Kasanoff, said that he was "absolutely thrilled to have the Duff sisters as part of the cast".[31] She also starred in the 2006 satirical comedy Material Girls, in which she co-starred with her sister Haylie Duff.[32] Duff along with her sister Haylie, received two more nominations for Razzie Awards for their roles in the film.[33]

2007–present: Independent films and television appearances

A two-part introspective documentary television special, Hilary Duff: This Is Now was produced to chronicle Duff's return to the recording industry. The show took two weeks to film and was shot in Los Angeles, Europe, and Spain. It was broadcast on MTV on April 3 and April 9, 2007. Duff was the guest star on The Andy Milonakis Show for its third season premiere in September 2007.
On September 7, 2007, Duff confirmed on MuchOnDemand, that she would be filming two independent films According to Greta, and What Goes Up.[34] Duff starred opposite John Cusack in War, Inc. which was released in theatres in Los Angeles and Manhattan, New York on May 23, 2008. In June 2008, Duff joined the cast of the Polish brothers comedy Stay Cool. She co-starred alongside Winona Ryder, Mark Polish, Sean Astin, Chevy Chase, and Jon Cryer. In the film, she portrayed the character of Shasta O'Neil, described as a sexy high school senior, the film was released in 2010.[35]
In early 2008, she was offered the lead role of Annie Mills in the CW Network's Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff, but she turned it down because she was more interested in looking for projects outside the teen genre.[36][37] In July 2009, She attained a role in Gossip Girl as a recurring guest star.[38] She played the character of Olivia Burke, a movie star who enrols at NYU in search of a traditional college experience. The following year, she won a Teen Choice Award for "Best Female Scene Stealer" for her role as Olivia Burke.[39] Duff starred in Beauty and the Briefcase, a romantic comedy based on the book Diary of a Working Girl, by Daniella Brodsky and directed by Gil Junger. The film premiered on ABC Family on April 18, 2010. In the film, Duff plays a fashion magazine columnist who writes about her dating struggles in the city.[40]
In May 2011, Duff starred in Bloodworth, an adaptation of the novel Provinces of Night by William Gay, where Duff plays Raven Halfacre, a teenage daughter of a promiscuous, alcoholic mother.[41] As of August 2011, Duff is scheduled to appear in an independent film called She Wants Me, directed by Rob Margolies,[42] in which, she plays a young Hollywood actress named Kim Powers.

She also released her first album, titled Santa Claus Lane which was a collection of Christmas songs which included duets with her sister, Haylie, Lil' Romeo, and Christina Milian. Accompanied by the Disney Channel-only single "Tell Me a Story (About the Night Before)", the album peaked at 154 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart and was certified gold.[43][44]
Duff's second studio album, Metamorphosis (2003), reached number one on the U.S. and Canadian charts[45] and sold over 3.9 million copies in the U.S by January 2007.[46] The lead single, "So Yesterday" was a top ten hit in several countries;[47] its follow-up was the Laguna Beach theme song "Come Clean". The third single, "Little Voice", was not released in the U.S. and was a minor hit in Australia.[48] In late 2003, Duff embarked on her first concert tour, the "Metamorphosis" tour, and later the "Most Wanted" tour. Most shows scheduled in the major cities were sold out.[49]
Duff's third studio album was the self-titled Hilary Duff, for which she co-wrote some songs.[50] It was released on her seventeenth birthday (in September 2004) and debuted at #2 in the U.S. and at #1 in Canada. The album sold over 1.8 million copies in the U.S.[51] Most Wanted, her first compilation album, was released in August 2005. Most Wanted included songs from her previous two albums, remixes and three new songs which included "Wake Up" written by Joel Madden and his brother, Benji, both members of Good Charlotte.[52] The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200[53] and became her third number one debut in Canada. She stated that compared to her previous music, it was "more dancey" and made use of more real instruments. She said, "I don't know exactly how to explain what we're doing, but it's fun and funky and different, something new for me. It's really cool".[57] In November 2008, Duff's first greatest hits album, Best of Hilary Duff was released[58] and the album's first single "Reach Out", which samples Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus", was released in the preceding month. The song became Duff's third #1 dance hit.[59][60] She then parted ways with Hollywood Records after six years of service and then announced to MTV that she would begin work on her new album in December 2008.[61] In October 2011, Duff mentioned plans of a possible new album to E! Online.[62] In January 2012, she confirmed that she had begun recording via her official website and twitter.[63][64]

Definitely something with kids or animals or something like that."[81]

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson[1] (born October 25, 1984), better known by her stage name of Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter and actress. Born in Santa Barbara, California, and raised by Christian pastor parents, Perry grew up listening to only gospel music and sang in her local church as a child. After earning a GED during her first year of high school, she began to pursue a career in music. As Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled gospel album in 2001, which was unsuccessful. She later recorded an album with production team The Matrix and completed the majority of a solo album from 2004–05, the latter of which was never released.
After signing with Capitol Music Group in 2007, her fourth record label in seven years, she adopted the stage name Katy Perry and released her first Internet single "Ur So Gay" that November, which garnered public attention but failed to chart. She rose to fame with the release of her second single "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008, which went on to top international charts. Perry's first mainstream studio album One of the Boys followed later that year and subsequently became the 33rd-best selling album worldwide of 2008.[2] It was accredited platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, while "I Kissed a Girl" and her second single "Hot n Cold" both received multi-platinum certifications. The recording earned two Grammy Awards nominations. In 2009, Billboard magazine named her the 51st-best-selling music artist of the 2000–2009 decade.[3] The album spawned other two hits singles on the charts, "Thinking of You" and Billboard top ten "Waking Up in Vegas". The One of the Boys's singles, digital tracks, and mobile products have sold more than 22 million copies worldwide.[4]
Her third studio album Teenage Dream was released in August 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, subsequently became the 11rd-best selling album worldwide of 2010 and 9rd-best selling album worldwide of 2011. The album included the Billboard chart-toppers "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T." and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", and top five hit "The One That Got Away". The album produced five Hot 100 toppers, and was only the second album—after Michael Jackson's Bad—to do so and the album produced six Hot 100 top five hits. It was the third album to reach this mark.[5][6] With "E.T." at number one on the chart of May 12, 2011, Perry became the first artist in history to spend 52 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. She spent a total of 69 consecutive weeks in the Top 10.[7] The recording earned six Grammy Award nominations, including the coveted Album of the Year and Record of the Year. In December 15, 2011, she was elected the Artist of the Year by MTV.[8] The Teenage Dream all the songs have approximately sold a total over 30 million copies worldwide aside from the album. The Teenage Dream singles alone have sold approximately 28 million copies worldwide.
According to Nielsen SoundScan sold over 37,620,000 million digital tracks alone United States,[9] and sold more 11 million albums worldwide which makes her one of the best selling artists of all time.
Perry became a guest judge on the seventh series of British television show The X Factor and the ninth season of American Idol. She has released fragrances "Purr" and "Meow". She voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs. Perry had a long relationship with Travie McCoy. She later married Russell Brand in October 2010,[10] and separated from him in December 2011.[11]

Early life and career

1984–2006: Early life and career beginnings

Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California[12] to Keith, a West Coast scenester in the 1960s,[13] and Mary Hudson (née Perry), an evangelist who grew up in Southern California and had "a tempestuous first marriage in Zimbabwe".[13] Perry has German, Portuguese, Irish, and English ancestry.[14][15] She is the second child of two pastors.[16] She has an older sister and younger brother.[13] Perry's mother's aunt and uncle were screenwriter Eleanor Perry and director Frank Perry.[13] Perry was incorporated into her parents' ministry[16] and sang in their church between the ages of nine and seventeen.[17] She grew up listening to gospel music,[18] was not allowed to listen to what her mother called "secular music",[17][19] and attended Christian schools and camps.[16] As a child, Perry learned how to dance in a recreation building in Santa Barbara. She was taught by seasoned dancers and began with swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.[20] She took her GED after her freshman year at Dos Pueblos High School and decided to leave school in the pursuit of a career in music.[21] Perry initially started singing "because [she] was at that point in [her] childhood where [she] was copycatting [her] sister and everything she [would do]."[21] Her sister practiced with cassette tapes, while Perry took the tapes herself when her sister was not around. She rehearsed the songs and performed them in front of her parents, who suggested she take vocal coaching. She grabbed the opportunity and began taking lessons at the age of nine and continued until she was sixteen. She later enrolled in at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, and studied Italian opera for a short period of time.[21]

At the age of 15, Perry's singing in church attracted the attention of rock veterans from Nashville, Tennessee, who brought her there to polish her writing skills.[22] In Nashville, Perry started recording demos and was taught by country music veterans how to craft songs and play guitar.[17][19] Perry signed to the Christian music label Red Hill, under which she recorded her first album at the age of 15.[23] Performing as Katy Hudson, she released the self-titled Gospel-rock album in 2001.[22] The album was unsuccessful, however, after the label ceased operations at the end of 2001.[23] She later changed her surname to Perry, her mother's maiden name, because "Katy Hudson" was too close to film actress Kate Hudson.[22][24]
At the age of 17, Perry left her home for Los Angeles, where she worked with Glen Ballard on an album for Island Records.[25] Growing up listening to mostly gospel music, Perry had few references when she began recording songs.[17] Asked by the producer with whom she would like to collaborate, Perry had no idea. That night, she went with her mother to a hotel. Inside, she turned on VH1 and saw producer Glen Ballard talking about Alanis Morissette;[17] Ballard produced Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, which had a "huge influence" on Perry.[22] She expressed interest in working with Ballard to her initial collaborator, who arranged a meeting for her with Ballard in Los Angeles. Perry presented one of her songs to Ballard. Ballard then helped Perry develop her songwriting over the next few years.[17] The album was due for release in 2005,[22][23] but Billboard reported it also went nowhere.[23] Perry was dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group.[13] Some of Perry and Ballard's collaborations included "Box", "Diamonds" and "Long Shot", were posted on her official MySpace page. "Simple", one of the songs she recorded with Ballard, was released on the soundtrack to the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.[26] "Long Shot" and "I Do Not Hook Up" was later recorded by Kelly Clarkson for her 2009 album All I Ever Wanted.[27]
Perry signed to Columbia Records in 2004. However, the label was not amenable with her vision, not putting her in the "driver's seat".[23] Instead, one of Columbia's ideas was to pair Perry with the record production team The Matrix, who was working on an album, to serve as its female vocalist. Although the album was later shelved,[28] she caught the attention of the music press: Her burgeoning music career led to her being named "The Next Big Thing" in October 2004 by Blender magazine.[23] With no album project ongoing, Perry began recording her own. Eighty percent completed, however, Columbia decided not to finish it and dropped her from the label.[23] While waiting to find another label, she worked in an independent A&R company called Taxi Music. In 2006, Perry was featured in the tail-end of the video to P.O.D.'s single "Goodbye for Now".[29] She made a cameo appearance in Carbon Leaf's video, "Learn to Fly".

2007–09: Commercial success with One of the Boys

Perry during Hello Katy Tour on March 27, 2009
While in the process of being dropped by Columbia in 2006, the company's publicity executive Angelica Cob-Baehler enthusiastically recommended Perry to Virgin Records chairman Jason Flom.[30] At the time Flom was leading a complete revival in fortunes at the label and looking to crown recent achievements by breaking a global pop act.[30] Despite mixed reactions from fellow Virgin executives, Flom became convinced that Perry could be that breakthrough star, and at the start of 2007 extended discussions with Columbia resulted in Perry signing to the newly created Capitol Music Group, a merger between Virgin and Capitol. As part of the deal, the label secured the masters to the unfinished album, recorded while at Columbia, that would go on to form a significant part of her official mainstream debut album, One of the Boys.[30]
The Columbia recordings were seen by Flom as being "very strong but lacking an undeniable smash or two that would work both at U.S. pop radio and internationally" and so one of the executive's first actions after completing the signing was to set up a collaboration between Perry and the writer-producer Dr. Luke.[30] The results were the songs "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold". Establishing her image was one of the immediate concerns of her management.[23] A campaign was started in November 2007 with the release of the video to "Ur So Gay", aimed at introducing her to the music market. A digital EP led by "Ur So Gay" was later released to create online buzz and press story.[16][23][31] This was a successful move that resulted in bringing Perry to the attention of Madonna,[23] who mentioned her on KISS FM and KRQ's JohnJay & Rich morning show in Arizona. On March 10, 2008, she appeared as herself on the ABC Family television series, Wildfire, on the episode "Life's Too Short".[32]
In the next step of promoting the album, Perry undertook a two-month tour of radio stations. The album's official lead single, "I Kissed a Girl", was released on May 6, 2008. Perry's A&R, Chris Anokute, told HitQuarters the song and its controversial theme had met with strong resistance at the label: "People said, 'This is never going to get played on the radio. How do we sell this? How’s this going to be played in the bible belt?'"[31] Anokute said that they needed the support of one of the label's radio promoters to convince people to believe in the record; otherwise, Perry would have likely been dropped again. Capitol's SVP of Promotions, Dennis Reese, saw the vision and helped push the single on national radio. The first station to pick it up and take a chance was The River in Nashville. After playing it for three days they were innundated with enthusiastic calls.[31] With the song climbing atop the charts, Perry embarked on the annual Warped Tour music festival, which her management used to "establish her as a credible performer and make sure she wasn't seen as just a one-hit wonder."[23] The single was a commercial success, peaking at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.[23] It has since become a major worldwide hit, topping charts in 30 countries,[28] including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.[33] On June 12, 2008, Perry appeared as herself on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless,[32] posing for the cover to the June 2008 issue of the fictional magazine Restless Style.[34] Perry also performed backing vocals on the song, "Another Night in the Hills" from Gavin Rossdale's 2008 solo album Wanderlust.[35]

One of the Boys was released on June 17, 2008 to mixed critical reviews.[36] The album has reached number nine on the Billboard 200,[37] and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[38] Perry released her second single, "Hot n Cold", which became her second top three single in dozens of countries around the world, including the United States where it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100,[23] as well as topping the charts in Germany, Canada, and Denmark. After Perry wrapped up her appearance at the Warped Tour, she went on tours in Europe. She later launched her first headlining tour, the Hello Katy Tour, in January 2009.[23] "I Kissed a Girl" earned Perry a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.[39] Perry was nominated in five categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Video, but lost to Britney Spears.[40] She won Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, which she co-hosted,[41] and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards.[42] On February 9, 2009, both "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold" were certified three-time platinum by Recording Industry Association of America for individual digital sales of over three million.[43] The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Perry in its 2010 version as the "Best Start on the US Digital Chart by a Female Artist," for having her first two singles sell over two million digital copies.[44]
The Matrix's self-titled debut album, which features Perry, was later released via the team's label, Let's Hear It, during Perry's solo tour. When the release date was scheduled, "I Kissed a Girl" had been charting well. Matrix member Lauren Christy spoke to Perry about the decision, but she wanted to hold the release until the fourth single of One of the Boys had been dispatched. Despite their communication, The Matrix was released on January 27, 2009, via iTunes Store.[45]
In December 2008, Perry apologized to British singer Lily Allen for remarks in which she called herself a "skinnier version" of her, saying she meant it as a joke.[46] Allen retaliated and told a British radio station that she "happen[ed] to know for a fact that she [Perry] was an American version" of her because their record company needed "to find something controversial and 'kooky'" like her.[47] In January 2009, Perry embarked on her first headlining world tour, the Hello Katy Tour, visiting North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Beginning on January 23, 2009, and ending on November 28, 2009, the tour consisted of 89 concerts. During that time, Perry also opened select concerts for the band No Doubt, on their Summer Tour 2009.
On May 16, 2009, Perry performed at the opening ceremony of the annual Life Ball in Vienna, Austria.[48] In June 2009, lawyers acting for Perry opposed the then-recent trademark of Australian fashion designer Katie Perry, who uses her own name to market loungewear.[49] Some media outlets reported this as a lawsuit, which Perry denied on her blog.[50] Katie Perry reported on her blog that at a hearing with IP Australia on July 10, 2009, the singer's lawyers withdrew their opposition to the trademark.[51] During the summer of 2009 Perry filmed a cameo appearance for Get Him to the Greek; her scene, in which she kisses her future fiancé Russell Brand was cut, and does not appear in the final film. Discussing the issue with MTV, Perry hypothesized there may have been some fear that seeing the two make out would have taken viewers out of the experience.[52] In 2009, Perry was featured on two singles: in August, a remix of Colorado-based band 3OH!3's song "Starstrukk" (the idea for the collaboration having come after Perry's tour that featured 3OH!3 as the supporting act, the song being released by iTunes on September 8, 2009); and, thereafter, in December, on "If We Ever Meet Again", the fourth single from Timbaland's album Shock Value II.[53] In October 2009, MTV Unplugged revealed that Perry was one of the artists to perform for them, and that she would be releasing a live album of the performance, including two new tracks, "Brick by Brick" and Fountains of Wayne cover "Hackensack".[54] The album, released on November 17, included both a CD and a DVD,[55] and debuted at #168 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

She was one of the many celebrities chosen to fulfil the role of judge whilst Dannii Minogue was on maternity leave. In May 2010, Perry released the first single, "California Gurls". The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks and was the fastest rising single from a Capitol Records artist since Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe" in 1967.[57][58]

The cover art for Teenage Dream is a painting by Will Cotton that depicts Perry lying naked on clouds of cotton candy; resembling the shots of Perry in the video for "California Gurls".[63] The booklet of the physical edition of the album, in keeping with the theme of cotton candy, has a cotton candy scent.[64]
On October 17, 2010, she later returned to The X-Factor on to perform future new single "Firework".[65] In October 2010, Perry released the third single, "Firework", peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for four non-consecutive weeks, making Perry the first female artist in eleven years to have three consecutive #1 singles from an album.[66]
Perry appeared at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, 2010.[67] She was nominated for two awards, including the Best Female Video and Best Pop Video for "California Gurls", and presented the award of "Best Male Video" with Nicki Minaj to Eminem. On September 14, she returned to her old high school, Dos Pueblos High School, where she performed a short set for the school's students.[68][69] Perry performed "Hot n Cold" with Elmo from Sesame Street, which was originally to appear on the forty-first-season premiere of the educational children's program on September 27, 2010. However, four days before the scheduled airing, Sesame Workshop announced, "In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video... we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on YouTube."[70] The main reason was that parents complained about what appeared to be a great amount of cleavage shown by her dress. Perry shot the video for "Firework" in Budapest in September 2010. An open casting call drew an unprecedented 38,000 applicants.[71] She proceeded to perform at a concert in Budapest on October 1, her first concert in Central and Eastern Europe. Perry released a perfume named "Purr" in November. It comes in a cat-shaped bottle, and is available through Nordstrom stores.[72][73]

Musical style and themes

Perry has a contralto vocal range.[93] Perry's first album is of the gospel music genre.[16][23] She related that her perspective in music was "a bit enclosed and very strict", and everything she did was church-related.[16] Her second album, One of the Boys, is described as "secular" and "rock," and reflects a departure from her religious musical roots.[16] Her next album Teenage Dream featured more pop songs in the vein of Boys.[20][94] Among Perry's musical influences are Alanis Morissette,[18][28] pop rockers Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Shirley Manson,[95] and Freddie Mercury,[17] the late frontman of the British band Queen. In her tribute to Mercury on what would have been his 65th birthday, Perry stated; "Without you I wouldn't be making music or doing what I do because your lyrics inspired me as a 15 year old girl."[96] She was especially inspired by the Queen song, "Killer Queen" to pursue a career in pop music after her first album.[16] She also described Morissette's album, Jagged Little Pill as having influenced her music profoundly; even going on to work with Morissette's collaborator on the album, Glen Ballard because of that.[22]
Perry is artistically involved in her projects, especially in the writing process. Since she could play guitar, she would start writing songs at home and present it to her producers. Perry is mostly inspired by specific moments of her life. She said it is easy for her to write songs about heartbreak.[17] Most of the themes in One of the Boys deal with heartbreak, teen adventure, and "puking into toilets".[22] Perry's mother reportedly told British tabloid Daily Mail that she dislikes her daughter's music, calling it "shameful and disgusting".[16][97] Perry said her mother was misquoted and told MTV that it was false information.[97] Her songs "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed a Girl" have received negative reactions from both religious and gay sectors.[97] The songs have been respectively labeled as being homophobic and promoting homosexuality, as well as "lez ploitational".[16] MTV mentioned criticism suggesting that Perry is using "bi-curiosity" as a way to sell records.[97] Perry responded to the controversy surrounding "Ur So Gay": "It's not a negative connotation. It's not, 'you're so gay,' like, 'you're so lame,' but the fact of the matter is that this boy should've been gay. I totally understand how it could be misconstrued or whatever ... It wasn't stereotyping anyone in particular, I was talking about ex-boyfriends."[98] Perry has written several songs for other singers, including Ashley Tisdale ("Time's Up"), Selena Gomez & the Scene ("Rock God" and "That's More Like It"), Kelly Clarkson ("Long Shot" and "I Do Not Hook Up"), Jessica James ("Bullet" and "Girl Next Door"), Lesley Roy ("Slow Goodbye"), Kady Malloy ("Wish You the Worst"), Adam Lambert ("Cookoo").

Public image

Perry in 2008
Perry is known for her unconventional style of dress.[20] It is often humorous, bright in color, and reminiscent of different decades, and she frequently uses fruit-shaped accessories, mainly watermelon, as part of her outfits.[95] Perry's transformation into an artist began with fashion, inspired by American film actress Dominique Swain's portrayal in the 1997 film Lolita.[22] She defines her fashion style as "a bit of a concoction of different things".[20] Her fashion has caught the attention of designers.[16][95] In June 2008, a publicity photo that showed Perry posing with a switchblade was criticized.[99] The picture was defended as only an effort to give Perry a "sexy, harder edge".[99] The criticism leveled at her was mocked by Perry who subsequently posed with a spoon instead.[100] She was ranked 7th in Rolling Stone's global Queen of Pop poll in July 2011.[101] Perry is also a gay activist. According to Dosomething.org, Perry had stated "I am a gay activist and I say that proudly. I voted no on Prop 8 (California’s Nov. 4, 2008 amendment declaring that marriage is defined as a union solely between a man and a woman), of course."[102]

Personal life

Perry has had relationships with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy, whom she met in a recording studio in New York,[24] breaking up in December 2008;[103] Relient K frontman Matt Thiessen, with whom she worked on her album Teenage Dream[104] as well as Kelly Clarkson's 2009 album All I Ever Wanted;[105] and British comedian Russell Brand.
Perry first met Brand in the summer of 2008[106] when she filmed a cameo appearance for Brand's film Get Him to the Greek.[107] Perry and Brand began dating after meeting again in September 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards,[108] where Brand, as host, remarked, "Katy Perry didn't win an award and she's staying at the same hotel as me, so she's gonna need a shoulder to cry on. So in a way, I'm the real winner tonight." The couple became engaged in December 2009 while vacationing in India.[109][110][111] At the time, Perry stated that she had plans to take dual British citizenship. "One of the first things I'll do is apply for dual citizenship. I'm not too sure if I have to take a test as I've not had time to look into it. But England is like my second home".[112] In an August 2010 interview with Rolling Stone, Perry also noted that, "I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth. I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen."[113][114][115] Perry and Brand married on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, the same location where Brand proposed.[116][117]
After 14 months of marriage, Brand filed for divorce from Perry on December 30, 2011 in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.[11] Just days before, rumors arose that the seemingly happy couple were having marital problems. An insider informed Us Weekly that they had gotten into a "massive fight" and spent Christmas in separate continents. Perry was in Hawaii and Brand in London; both of them were seen without their wedding rings.[118][119]
